PUPPYTEST What is a puppytest? Why do you have to test your puppies, is it not the buyers of the pup themselves who choose the pup they wish to buy? How do you best secure that pup and owner fit eachother. A
puppytest takes place when the pup reaches its eigth’ week of living.
Meaning it has reached 7 weeks of age and may not be older than 8 weeks.
It is important for the testresults that this age-limit is kept to secure
the best result. It would be for the best for the test to take place at the breeders home so as transporting of the puppies by car will not cause unnecessary fear or sickness. The most trustworthy result is achieved if the puppies have not spend a lot of time in the room in which the test will take place. It has too be completely empty with no furniture or other distracting objects. The breeder is allowed to watch as the test is held so they can observe how the test works and how the pups react. The puppies are tested one at a time and meanwhile the rest will be locked away with the mother and possibly other dogs from the kennel. Puppies should be tested and valued by someone they don't know because it gives a better image of what the individual pup contains and whether it is an alfa- or underdog. It is important that each puppy is tested alone without presence of or interference from other dogs. The puppy can show a complete different image when among a pack or if one or more dogs/puppies are present. Unfortunately most puppies are still being picked while they are with the rest of the pack. There are people who still believe that the puppy that aproaches them first is the strongest and the one they should choose. That is a big mistake. The puppy that aproaches first may just as well be the one that just happened to be awake or if it always acts that way it could be because it figured out that it is best to stick around before the bullies show up because then you will get pushed out of the way. The puppy sitting in the back of the room may very well be the strongest. It will not aproach as the first because it has control and would like to have an overlook of the situation and choose who to say hello to. The Alfa-male is not the one to be in front when you have guests either. You should ofcourse be aware of whether this behavior is because it is nervous and afraid or not. It is important to find the right pup for the buyers who contact you. Each puppy can be a good one and become a good dog in the new family if they fit eachother. It is no use to sell a strong dog to an untrained and unexperienced buyer “just” because you only got the badboy left and want to get rid of the last puppy. You often asked for it yourself when the buyer returns because the task got out of hand. The puppytest can give you a guidence about what kind of puppy you are dealing with and help the buyer characterize the puppy in the desired direction from the beginning. You get a little inside look in where the puppy has it’s strong and weak sides, just like you do when you, when it is old enough, brings it to a mentalitytest for young dogs. Buyers often forget to look at what the dog possesses inside the head. They choose from what the eyes see when they come for a visit. Have the puppy raised and ear so it looks adorable or does i have a little white spot so it is easier to find among the others. It is not the little white spot or lack of same that creates the problems in the relationship between dog and man in the future, but what is inside the head of the little bauwauw. That is why you as a responsible breeder pick your buyers well and explain to them what kind of puppy they can buy in the kennel. If puppy and buyer does not fit you should thank no to the deal. Someone who will fit the dog will show up later or you may have to choose to put it to sleep or keep it. It is also important to explain that a puppytest is not a “teachers edition” on what kind of dog it is or a garanti on the dogs abilities and behavior. It is an extra guidence and help to match dog and owner. In the wrong hands you can easily get a “bad dog” out of an otherwise fine puppy and likewise get a reasonable dog out of a weak and dependent puppy. Hence this invite: Get your puppies tested and use the testresults to find your buyers and help both yourself and the buyer to get a good dog out of the puppy in its future home. It is not allowed to copy the test or use it in any way without asking the owner, Helle Mulvad.
