Belsique's Fanny,
Tervueren Fanny
was an amazingly harmonic and social dog who loved all animals and
humans. She was loved by everybody and a really good mother dog and
family dog. Unfortunately she got an uterus infection when she was 6
years old and thus had her uterus removed. Through the last couple of
years her hearing reduced and she got a little demented and suffered
from osteoarthritis. We decided then to put her to sleep at the age of
14 because her life was no longer worth living. She is greatly missed by
the whole family. |
|
Sejerø's Elanie of Indian Summer,
Tervueren Elanie
was an absolutely amazing dog in many ways and it was hard to notice her
flaws when you knew her. She was very strong both mentally and
physically but the last 2 years it became very troublesome to have her
amongst our other dogs. She became extremely aggressive towards other
dogs and it was impossible to have her in the pack. Her position in the
pack was threatened by her reduced vision which she had because of
cataract which may have been one of the reasons to her changed behaviour
but we will never know. Elanie was a mentally very strong dog and she
was a stable and lovely training buddy. She was a very rare dog that I
quickly grew much attached to. She was “my” dog and I fell for her
the very first time I saw her as a puppy. It’s very sad she didn’t
get the chance to grow old with us but we just couldn’t give her a
life constantly isolated from the other dogs in the family. |
|
Palma de Lescaut (Petite), Groenendael Palma or Petite as we called her was an unbelievably happy and work happy dog. She was sweet and friendly to both other animals and people. Unfortunately she had a bad case of HD in both hips so we where forced to put her to sleep when she was only 1½ years old. When she ran you could hear the bones rub against each other and she would rather not sit down. It really was a great sorrow to let go of yet another sick dog and the result was that we had to rethink whether or not we wanted to continue having Belgian Shepherds and breeding. |
|
Arwen v. d. Schagerwaard, Tervueren Arwen is a
really sweet and
friendly family dog. She
missed a few teeth and so did her sister from the same litter so we
decided not to breed on her. Since she where and still is a very easy
and loving dog we chose to let another family get the pleasure of her
and she is now protector and friend with a retired lady where she is
doing well. |
|
Belsique's Noir Nala Noel of Xanthi,
Groenendael Nala had one litter while living with us. Unfortunately she comes from the same line of dogs as the many dogs with epileptic diseases we have produced so we decided not to breed on her again and find her a new home. Nala herself does not have an epileptic disease and she’s got a nice gentle temperament and is now a great family dog. |
|
Mahagonny's Sophisticated Lady, Tervueren Fisti-
where in many
ways an odd
dog. She was nice and
friendly towards strangers she liked and usually towards other dogs as
well, but she didn’t put up with anything from the other dogs. We had
one litter on her and after that it went down hill with her fast. We
where wondering a lot when people came to see the puppies because it was
like she was sorting what kind of people they where. She either loved
them or had no intentions of greeting them. It was very strange and we
tried to check if she had gone blind since she suddenly got those weird
ideas. Unfortunately her behaviour continued to get worse. She didn’t
harm anyone but when we where out we couldn’t let her go because we
couldn’t call her back. That way we realised she was completely deaf.
She could probably hear a little as a puppy and young dog but her
hearing has with out a doubt been reduced very fast to nearly nothing.
We decided after thinking about it many times to have her put to sleep
because it was quite troublesome to never have her running around freely
and she some times had problems with the other dogs as well. |
|
Belsique's Fiona of Xanthi,
Groenendael Fiona
was a mentally strong dog and she had 3 litters with us. She was very
lovely and easy in the everyday life but she had an unlucky experience
when she was 10 months old which left it’s marks. She guarded our home
so intensely people couldn’t just come and go without us being around
without her not having a taste of them as they went through the gate.
Statistically speaking Fionas litters does not look good when it comes
to epilepsy because all her litters have diseased puppies. Because of
all that we chose to put her to sleep. |
|
Belsique's Xanthi, Groenendael Xanthi
is one of our most used females for breeding. She was a strong but also
very friendly and loving female who where and amazing dog mother. She
would probably risk her life for her puppies and had to be forced away
from her newly born puppies to survive herself. She had the opinion that
when you became a mother you stayed with them in the box 24/7 until they
where old enough to move away from home. She guarded them like a lioness
and no other dogs where allowed to come near the box before the puppies
where able to get out of it by them selves. Only when the puppies where
around 3 weeks old did she allow the other dogs to help take care of
them. She was one of a kind when it came to be a mother. As young Xanthi
got an uterus infection and so we feared she’d become sterile.
Thankfully it turned out she wasn’t and in her first litter she got 10
puppies. “Only” 9 of those where registered though because on the
first night she laid down on one of the males and it was dead when we
woke up. Xanthi is mother to many great puppies. She had both
Groenendael and Tervuren in all her litters and we kept 2 females (Fanny
and Fiona) and a male (Ganti) whom all where a great pleasure. When
Xanthi was 12 years old she got another uterus infection and this time
we chose to put her to sleep as we thought she’d had a good life until
now. |
|
Belsique's Ganti of Xanthi. Groenendael Ganti
was a real nuisance I’m sure many would say with a smile. He was the
most intrusive dog you could meet. He was sweet, gentle, free spirited,
open minded, attentive and loved everything and everyone so much it had
to be considered too much. He couldn’t participate in a fight because
one way or another he always managed to stop it before it began. He was
just too sweet! He didn’t growl at other dogs neither males or females
and he where very exuberant in his greeting to people. That’s why it
was such a pleasure to use him on mental test courses where people
learned how to handle dogs. It was more Ganti handling the people who
needed to learn than the other way around. He fathered one litter of
puppies but unfortunately he too was out of the line with epileptic
diseases so he has offspring with epileptic diseases too. At the age of
6 he got an epileptic disease after making puppies. He only had small
absences (petit mal) and never came to have a tonic-clonic (grand mal)
seizure but he still became an outcast in the pack and the other dogs
attacked him when he froze from a seizure. After a serious seizure where
he got a big bloody ear we decided to put him to sleep. |
|
Hugin v.t. Belgisch Schoon, Groenendael Hugin
was a male we where offered quite sudden. We wanted a male we could use
for breeding and had already tried with 2 other males that didn’t live
to our expectations because of diseases. The breeder to Hugin died
suddenly leaving the spouse with a litter of 8 week old puppies from
which they’d planned to keep one for them selves. Another breeder
heard about these unsold puppies and contacted us. We had to decide very
quickly whether or not to take one of these puppies. We didn’t take
long to decide and so we drove to Holland to get Hugin as he was named.
Hugin was a sweet dog but as he grew older we could see that he didn’t
live up to our expectations. He had an underhung jaw with a couple of
teeth so we only just got him approved at the one show we entered him
in. his temperament was funny too. One day he was a free spirited dog
who handled everything well and other days he’d be scared the minute
we where outside the gate. On such days he’d be scared of everything
including the people we’d meet and those who came to visit – also
those he already knew and normally wasn’t afraid of. When he was
mental tested he handled everything concerning contact with strangers
and the play really well but the rest he could barely handle. He
couldn’t let off his steam positively and carried the problems from
place to place. In the end it was almost impossible to walk him because
of his stress and fear for what he would meet on his way and because of
that we had him put to sleep after only 2½ year. |
|
A-Te-Ell's Monsieur Kevin, Groenendael Kevin
was a beautiful and lovely dog to whom we had high expectations. He was
bought with breeding in mind and we where very excited about his mother
whom in our eyes where an amazing dog with a really good temperament.
Just what we where looking for. The father we didn’t know but we had
only good feedback on him the places we asked. Kevin was one out of many
pups as there where 10 in the litter. We had the option of choosing
freely between 6 males. Kevin where the one we liked the most and he
turned out to be a lovely dog as well that where easy to train and
fitted well into the pack. Unfortunately he had bad hips which he showed
by becoming insecure when ever he put too much strain on his hips. The
first time we
noticed was when we entered him at
the European show in Bella centeret. The waiting time was very long and after some hours Kevin had had enough
and didn’t feel like saying hello to people anymore. He laid down and
wasn’t interested in doing anything. Luckily you couldn’t see
anything on him when he was in the ring and he did well too. Another odd
thing was that he never wanted to sit. He was either standing or lying
down and he preferred to chew in something. It didn’t take long before
all of our chairs where chewed in. he didn’t usually chew up things
and had no problems staying home alone but after exercising he always
had to chew in something when we came home. He was impossible to have in
the car as well. After just 10meters of driving he emptied his bowels
and this he continued with to the day of his death even though he had no
problems getting into the car. First when we saw the x-rays of his hips
did we realise the reason for this strange behaviour. His hips where so
bad he must have had major pains. He was put to sleep shortly after. The
breeder didn’t have anymore puppies on his mother even though it
turned out that the bad hips most likely came from the father or maybe
it was just one of those unlucky results that sometimes occur. We would
probably have said yes to another puppy of the same mother but obviously
not from the same father. Since the female didn’t have anymore puppies
we got a mating on Fiona with one of the kennels males instead. |
|
Belsique's Dempsey, Groenendael Dempsey
was definitely Helles dog and he still stands as the best dog we ever
had. He was a lively and happy puppy but somewhat cautious to strangers
the first couple of years. He was trained in DCH and quickly he proved
to be an amazing work buddy. He had a huge love for work and was an
amazingly fast learner. He really only had to watch things once to do it
himself and with minimal training he did well at the few tests we
managed to attend. He was amazing at fetch and fetched anything that was
thrown and if you didn’t throw anything he’d just find something on
his own he would return with for you to play with him. He was used on
the performance team because he was so good at fetch. He, among other
things, had to fetch a Tuborg(beer) in a box where every other bottle
was HOF. It was a great success because there was nothing wrong with his
nose either. He became a friend to everyone and he loved to nudge people
in the stomach with his nose to make them throw things to him.
Unfortunately he got prostate cancer so we chose to put him to sleep
before it got worse. |
|
Oud Sabbinge Lupo v. Krak, Groenendael Lupo
was the first male we bought for breeding – or so we thought. He was 9
months old so we could see he had all his teeth and both testicles and
he looked pretty good even though he was small and he was very friendly
and easy to approach. Lupo where however not your typical Belgian. He
was very calm and friendly and he wasn’t very interested or attentive
as a working dog. He however did put up with everything and could walk
with anybody who’d care for him. He was small in size and looked more
like a female with rich fur but he sure was sweet. He developed a skin
disease which made us choose not to keep him and so after a couple of
years he got a new family who could take care of him the rest of his
life. |
|
El Zarroz Elfi, Groenendael Elfi
was a big and strong female who turned out just as we expected except
for her hips. She was mentally strong and had a very free spirited
temperament. We had her x-rayed without any suspicions of anything being
wrong and expecting to get a litter on her. Unfortunately one of her
hips turned out to be in really bad condission so that’s why her life
didn’t last longer. It was terrible because here we where thinking the
Belgian Shepherds where healthy and well and certainly didn’t have HD
and then our new “breeding female” was hit with this horrible
disease. |

Vesta
or Sheena as she was called is our most used female for breeding and
she’s delivered a lot of great puppies. She loved to work and was a
mentally steady female who loved all humans and where a great dog in the
pack. She was very attentive and where a dream to train with. She had
just a couple of puppies too many, but we didn’t plan all of them
ourselves either :) It’s not uncommon for dogs to handle it themselves
and make a fool of their owners when you have both genders and with kids
in the house things can often go wrong. Therefore Sheena got 2 litters
with Dempsey that we didn’t plan, thankfully the puppies turned out to
be lovely. She grieved a lot when her sister from the same litter
Bellona died and after a while she got an uterus infection and was
treated several times but in the end we had to put her to sleep. |
|
Bellona, Groenendael Bellona
whom we called Mischa was our first Belgian. She was a calm and steady
female who didn’t make a big fuss about herself. She had a very
special peace and had an amazing overlook. She controlled the other dogs
and her puppies with a security and peace only few are able to. Mischa
where Johnnys dog and she worked with him in the military to big
pleasure for many. Mischa mothered our very first litter of puppies and
she delivered many great puppies in the 4 litters she where able to get.
She died after a short term illness which made her wither away within
few weeks. She was put to sleep and not examined any further but
everything points to her having cancer in either her uterus or stomach. |
